JUST 1145 Classical Jewish Texts: Moving Toward Modernity

Exploration of masterpieces of Jewish literature. Various genres of Jewish writings, including biblical, rabbinic, poetic, philosophical, mystical, and kabbalistic. Examination of the extent to which modern Jewish literature adapted and/or broke away from earlier classical genres/ A particular focus on the writings (and/or films) of Sholom Aleichem, Woody Allen, Ahad Ha'am, and I. B. Singer. (Not open to students who have completed Core Curriculum 3111 or JUST 2545.) 2017-2018 Satisfies Pathways College Option requirement. 2018-2019 Satisfies Pathways Flexible Core World Cultures and Global Issues requirement and College Option requirement.
