The emergence of the United States as a major world power; Wilsonianism; the United States and the 1920s world; the debate over isolationism and presidential power; World War II; the onset of the Cold War; nuclear weapons and U.S. foreign policy; Latin America; Vietnam and the collapse of the liberal consensus; detente; American foreign policy in an age of uncertainty; the ending of the cold war; 9/11 and its impacts; U.S. campaigns in the Middle East. Special attention will be paid to the viewpoints presented by dissenters on both the right and the left.
