The origins, development, and evolving political culture of the Russian empire from the seventeenth century to the transformative era of Great Reforms in the late nineteenth century. Imperial conquest and colonization across Eurasia. Imperial Russian preoccuptation and engagement with ?the West.? Imperial Russian approaches to religious and cultural difference across the empire. The construction and experience of social and ethnic hierarchies. Special emphasis on the ideology of Russian autocracy and empire.
