ENGL 3288 Genre Fiction

4 hours; 4 credits

Introduction to the study of popular literature through works in a single category of genre fiction. The genre may be broad?science fiction, mystery, romance, horror, western?or a subspecies?e.g., Afrofuturism; the Asian-American detective; queer historical romance; ecological horror; young adult dystopias. Coursework will include examples of the genre, theory and criticism, and may include study of related cultural objects?e.g., cinematic adaptations, merchandise, fan clubs and fan fiction. Fulfills Breadth and Depth Area Studies B requirement: Genre, Thematic Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies.

Prerequisite: ENGL 1010 [1 or 1.7] Prerequisite or corequisite: ENGL 1012 [2 or 2.7]
