ENGL 3255: Twenty-First-Century World Literature
4 hours; 4 credits
This course asks and answers questions about the formal, thematic, and sociological reasons that certain books draw a transnational readership. Topics include: the currents of literary influence across borders and languages; techniques for representing a complex, interconnected world; themes that find success internationally such as migration and exile, globalization and geo-politics, the oppression of women, war and traumatic memory; the ?world republic of letters? and the material role of an inequitable system of book prizes, translations, and film adaptations in shaping a canon of world literature. Fulfills Breadth and Depth Area Studies B requirement: Genre, Thematic Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, or alternatively, Period Courses 6: 1950?present.
