American literature from World War II to the end of the twentieth century. A range of arts (novel, poetry, drama), forms (post-modernism, realism, genre fiction), and contexts (the Cold War, Civil Rights and other social movements, new patterns of immigration, the sexual revolution, and the emergence of a truly global economy). Writers may include James Baldwin, Thomas Pynchon, Toni Morrison, Philip Roth, Maxine Hong Kingston, Leslie Marmon Silko, Tony Kushner, Jamaica Kincaid, Adrienne Rich, Maria Helena Viramontes, and others.

Prerequisite: ENGL 1010; or corequisite ENGL. 1012.
