Artistic development and growth of the novel as progressive social criticism; topics may include: disease; the city; the victimized working class; the ?problematic? governess; racialized character depiction; unconscious colonialism, imperialism, white supremacy. Writers may include Dickens, Thackeray, the Brontės, George Eliot, and Victorian ?writers of color? such as Amy Levy and Mary Seacole.

Prerequisite: ENGL 1010; or corequisite ENGL. 1012.
