Works of authors such as Stendhal, Balzac, Flaubert, Zola, Manzoni, Dostoevsky, Turgenev, and Tolstoy in the context of 19th-century history, philosophy, art, fashion, and music. Topics may include: realism, social and political climate, provincial life and cityscapes, father-son relationships, the new woman, the prostitute, the peasant and the worker, food, martyrdom, stylistic techniques, the bildungsroman.

Prerequisite: ENGL 1012
