CBSE 3204 Teaching Literacy: Integrated Reading Methodologies

2 hours recitation, 2 hours supervised field experience; 3 credits

An integrated approach to teaching literacy with a focus on reading pedagogies to all children, including multilingual learners and students with special needs. Appropriate multiple research-validated reading instructional strategies; formal and informal reading assessment methods for evaluating student reading development and improving reading instruction. Discussion of early literacy development, evidence-based approaches to reading instruction, comprehension strategies, striving readers, differentiation, digital literacies, and computational thinking in literacy. Development of culturally sustaining theory as it relates to reading instruction. Development of a strategies based reading lesson. Continuation of portfolio development. Supervised field experiences.

Prerequisite: Childhood and Special Education 2001 and 2002. Corequisite: Childhood and Special Education 3202.
