SPCL 3350 Literacy for Exceptional Learners

3 hours; 3 credits

Overall introduction to research, policies, and practices related to reading assessments and interventions for students. Focus on translating theories of reading into practice of designing targeted interventions for students with varying abilities in core reading components. All components follow recommendations by the National Reading Panel and current evidence-based research. Activities allow application of underlying principles of diagnostic reading instruction and field-based practice administering, scoring, and introduction of interpreting reading assessments. After collecting assessment data, practice making data-based decisions about instruction in literacy. Introduction to evidence-based writing instruction. 20 hours of field experience.
