PHIL 3714 Philosophy of Economics 3 hours; 3 credits Philosophical analysis of the methodology of economics, and of the ethical implications of economic theory and its applications to public policy. Survey of major philosophical approaches to economic methodology, considering classical and contemporary sources. Rationality in economics and morality. Ethical analysis of such basic concepts of economic theory as welfare and efficiency, and their relationships to liberty, rights, equality and justice. Prerequisite: one course in philosophy or Core Studies 10 or Core Curriculum 1210 [2.1].
