PHIL 3611 Philosophy of Biology 3 hours; 3 credits Intensive study of selected areas in the philosophy of biology including the origin of life: teleological, functional, and mechanistic explanations; the theory of evolution and the neo-Darwinian synthesis; reductionism, genetics, and hierarchies; taxonomy and the species problem; and sociobiology.
