Selected topics in the history of jazz, from its origins to the present. Research and analysis of recordings, transcriptions, and arrangements. Emphasis on social and cultural context. Students may take this course for credit twice but may notrepeat topics.

Prerequisite: Music 11.4 or 3243 [24.3] or permission of the director.
