Degree Details

39 Pathways Credits*

56 Major Credits

25 General Elective Credits

Students may apply a minor towards their general elective credits.

120 Total Credits

*The Pathways curriculum is typically 42 credits. However, the Spanish Teacher B.A. major includes one course (SEED 2001) that also satisfies a Pathways requirement. Therefore, students majoring in Spanish Teacher B.A. need to complete 39 additional Pathways credits.

The four-year degree map is designed to help you take the right courses in the right order so you can graduate in four years. It also helps you distinguish what courses qualify as Pathways courses, or Major courses, or General Elective courses. Ideally, you should follow the four-year degree map as closely as possible, but you are free to make some adjustments so long as the prerequisite requirements are satisfied.

Heritage speakers may register for SPAN 1038 in lieu of SPAN 1010, 1020, and 1030. After completing SPAN 1038, heritage speakers should register for SPAN 2018 before beginning more advanced courses in the major. Please consult with the chairperson of the Modern Languages Department to determine or confirm the proper course sequence for you. If the student is a native speaker, or has taken advanced courses in high school, the first SPAN course at Brooklyn College should be SPAN 2120 or an equivalent composition course. The student can then take SPAN 2030W the following term.

**In lieu of two SPAN 3000-level or higher courses, students may complete two courses from the following options: 1) Up to two additional courses from Modern Languages 2310 or higher 2) Two courses in a second language, level 2021 or higher 3) Up to two courses in related areas, subject to department approval

Thirty credits in the content area are required for New York state certification to teach a Language Other Than English at the secondary level. Twenty-four of those credits must be taken in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. An average of B or higher in the major is required for student teaching. An average of B- or higher in the major is required for all SEED courses.

In conjunction with the four-year degree map, you should review Degree Works, and the Brooklyn College website, for an approved list of courses in your major. Overall, it is best to review your academic plan with your advisor on a regular basis.
