The Philosophy and Other Fields BA is recommended for students planning careers in medicine, cognitive science, the arts, and for other students interested in acquiring a knowledge of philosophy that also contributes to the understanding of another field. It is unique in that students are not necessarily required to take courses in a particular order. There are various course-sequences students can follow to complete the major. The order outlined above is simply one suggestion, among many, and meant more as a general guide for Philosophy majors. Therefore, please feel free to make some adjustments, so long as prerequisite requirements are observed.

The Pathways curriculum is typically 42 credits. However, the PPhilosophy and Other Fields major includes courses that also satisfy Pathways requirements. Therefore, students majoring in Philosophy and Other Fields only need to complete 39 Pathways credits.

*Students must complete one of the following "Other Fields" component of the major:

  • (1) At least 12 credits in courses taken in a single department or program outside the Philosophy Department.
  • (2) At least 12 credits in any selection of the following science courses: BIOL 1001, 1002; CHEM 1040, 1050, 1100, 2050, 2100, 2500, 3510 or both 3511 and 3512, 3520 or both 3521 and 3522; HNSC 2109 or 2130; PHYS 1100, 1111, 1112, 1150, 1190, 2100, 2150.
  • (3) A minor in Cognitive Science, or Global Studies, or Corporate Social Responsibility.
  • (4) A minor in Philosophy and the Arts, or Philosophy and the Sciences, or Philosophy, Culture and the Social Sciences, or Professional and Applied Ethics, or Logic, Reasoning and Rationality.

The department Chair, with the approval of the Chair of the department's curriculum committee, may allow substitutions for one or more course requirements, consistent with the educational goals of the program.

In conjunction with the four-year degree map, you should review Degree Works, and the Brooklyn College website, for an approved list of courses in your major. Overall, it is best to review your academic plan with your advisor regularly.
