Degree Details

39 Pathways Credits*

32 Major Credits

49 General Elective Credits

Students may apply a second major, or a minor, towards their general elective credits.

120 Total Credits

*The Pathways curriculum is typically 42 credits. However, the Linguistics major includes a course (LING 2001) that also satisfies a Pathways requirement. Therefore, students majoring in Linguistics only need to complete 39 additional Pathways credits.

The four-year degree map is designed to help you take the right courses in the right order so you can graduate in four years. It also helps you distinguish what courses qualify as Pathways courses, or Major courses, or General Elective courses. Ideally, you should follow the four-year degree map as closely as possible, but you are free to make some adjustments, so long as the prerequisite requirements are satisfied.

The Linguistics major is unique in that students are not necessarily required to take courses in a particular order, except that courses in Area 2 (see below) can only be taken after LING 2001. There are a great many different course-sequences students can follow to complete the major. The order outlined above is one suggestion, among many, and meant more as a general guide for Linguistics majors. Therefore, please meet with an advisor in the Linguistics Department to customize your course selections and sequence.

*Area 2: Students must complete three courses from: LING 3019, LING 3020, LING 3021, LING 3022, LING 4000.

**Area 3: Students must complete two courses from: ANTH 1300, ANTH 3301, ENGL 3520, LING 3023, LING 3026, LING 3028, LING 3029, PHIL 3203, PHIL 3204, PHIL 3530, PSYC 3540, PSYC 3541, CASD 1113, CASD 2231.

***Area 4: Students must complete two courses from: ANTH 2320, ANTH 3310, ANTH 3360, CISC 2210, CISC 3110, CISC 3130, CISC 3410, ENGL 3196, ENGL 3522, ENGL 3523, PHIL 3123, PHIL 3220, PHIL 3420, PHIL 3422, PRLS 4410, PRLS 4420, PSCY 2600, PSYC 3400, PSYC 3530, PSYC 3580, CASD 1178, CASD 1179, one course in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures numbered 2021 or higher, GRKC 4031 or higher, LATN 4131 or higher, HEBR 3111 or higher, or any unused courses from Areas 2 and 3 above.

When a student chooses to double major in Linguistics and another major, up to three courses in areas 3 and 4, which are applicable towards the requirements of the student's other major, may also be applied toward the requirements for the Linguistics major.

In conjunction with the four-year degree map, you should review Degree Works, and the Brooklyn College website, for an approved list of courses in your major. Overall, it is best to review your academic plan with your advisor on a regular basis.
