The four-year degree map is designed to help you take the right courses in the right order so you can graduate in four years. It also helps you distinguish what courses qualify as Pathways courses, or Major courses, or General Elective courses. DegreeMaps are a suggested way through the major, but students may have alternate routes depending on their individual situations. Please reach out to the Undergraduate Deputy Chair to discuss any specific concerns and to be academically advised: HistoryDeputy@brooklyn.cuny.edu
*Students majoring in History must complete at least one course from each of the following areas: a) Pre-1500 (Ancient, medieval, and early modern history), b) European history, c) Transnational and comparative history, d) United States history, e) African, Asian, Caribbean, Latin American, and Middle Eastern history. Please refer to http://www.brooklyn.cuny.edu/web/academics/schools/socialsciences/departments/history/undergraduate/courses_u.php?sch=n&div=U&disc=HIST.&department=48&dept_id=88 for a list of HIST courses pertaining to each area. Students are encouraged to visit the Department of History to pick up a "History Major Requirements Worksheet" as well. With permission of the Chairperson, one course taken outside the department may count towards the major.
In conjunction with the four-year degree map, you should review Degree Works, and the Brooklyn College website, for an approved list of courses in your major. Overall, it is best to review your academic plan with your advisor on a regular basis.
